A landscape oil painting based on the New Zealand hills in ornate gold frame.
In this series I was keeping the intense colour but attempting to bring a later time-of-day into the feel of the works.
All the works in the exhibition were painted across numerous sessions in layers of oil paint glazes. With these ones, brighter colours of the underpainting are exposed by scraping and sanding back the top layers.

This oil painting was produced in 2013 on 30 canvas panels each 200mm square. The work is a continuation of the landscape theme in the 2013 exhibition that was exploring my feeling of belonging to the hills of New Zealand. These were fragments of place in my thoughts that drew me to reproduce the hill motif over and over again. I called it Self Landscape but it wasn’t until 2021 that I made the extraordinary discovery of my Māori heritage with ties to the Ngai Tahu people and landscape of New Zealand. The Self and the Landscape are, as it turns out, truly enmeshed somehow in my being.

The is from a series of six works and has a deliberate romantic misty representational style that invites the viewer in to an imagined landscape and place whereas works in later series take a more gestural, even abstract, approach.
