Self Landscape
This oil painting was produced in 2013 on 30 canvas panels each 200mm square. The work is a continuation of the landscape theme in the 2013 exhibition that was exploring my feeling of belonging to the hills of New Zealand. These were fragments of place in my thoughts that drew me to reproduce the hill motif over and over again.
I called it Self Landscape but it wasn’t until 2021 that I made the extraordinary discovery of my Māori heritage with ties to the Ngai Tahu people and landscape of New Zealand. The Self and the Landscape are, as it turns out, truly enmeshed somehow in my being.
